I have found something I like to pick up while I’m hitting yard
sales… costumes!!

Usually we don’t really talk about costumes until August – but,
it occurred to me that even though you probably won’t be
selling used costumes until then, NOW is the time to pick them up
at yard sales.

So – I got in touch with my friend Sherah Taylor again (she wrote
the Secrets To Garage Sale Bargains that is with the Summer Toy
Guide this year) and asked her about a great resource she put
together about buying used costumes to resell. I was able to work
out another great deal for you guys… 🙂

First of all – a word about costumes…
Used costumes are a great item to resell. You can pick them up at
yard sales $1-$10 regularly! In fact, one year I picked up an
entire bin full of costumes for just 5 bucks… one of the costumes
was a Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) costume and I resold it for $40. You
can also pick up used costumes at thrift shops and consignment
stores, but they won’t usually show up there until September…
and you’ll pay more than at yard sales.

So – here is what I suggest. I recommend picking up costumes at
yard sales this summer… then as you get closer into the season
for selling Halloween costumes (August – early October) you have a
couple of choices.

First of all – you can resell your costumes on eBay or Amazon…
even Craigslist.

Secondly – if you find that you have costumes that aren’t
selling well for you in August and early September, you can bring
them to a consignment shop and upgrade for other costumes or items
(toys) that will do better for you. Usually you walk out ahead on
this because of the super low price you paid for the costumes at
yard sales.

toys, used costumes are an amazing seller and can lead you right
into the Holiday selling season… in fact, Sherah lists over 250
costumes that tend to sell for $20-$80 on eBay during the Halloween

Sherah KNOWS costumes! She has made loads selling them herself.
Every year I hear how she picked up a USED Disney BOO costume for
about 10 bucks… and easily turns it around for a huge profit (of
over $100!). It’s a short selling season – which means you
don’t have to hold onto your inventory long… and it is well
worth your investment.

Anyhow – Sherah spills the beans on how she works her magic with
costumes. If you sell costumes (of even if you don’t but want

If you are shopping to build your costume inventory – then knowing
what to pay for them could prove to be very helpful 😉

What Prices Should I Pay?
From Secrets to Selling Hot Halloween Costumes, by Sherah Taylor

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and pay more than
you should, especially if you’re not sure. When in doubt, buy it
anyway IF there is a return policy.

Don’t be alarmed at the total that comes up on the register when
you go to check out ~ it’s easy to drop a big chunk of money on
costumes. Just remember that you can make 500% profit at the
drop of a hat if you play your cards right! $300 spent can easily
turn into a $3,000 profit for you this Halloween season.

If the costume you find is a very hot seller, and you know for a
fact that it will sell for $50 or more, I would pay up to $20 for
it. But $20 is my absolute max. Normally I hesitate to buy anything
that is over $12 unless I know it’ll sell for much higher –
anything under that is fine to pay, even if you’re not sure
it’ll sell or not, as long as you can bring it back. Prices are going to
vary by area and by store, so you’ll need to be familiar with
current selling prices as you make your decisions to buy.

Last year I made out like a bandit on costumes. Pretty much
every single costume I sold gave me a profit of at least $10, but
many of them I made up to $30 a costume (some of them $50-
$60!) – they’re a very big money maker! If you have 20 costumes
that you paid an average of $8 a piece for, that comes to $160. If
each of those costumes averages (and this is nice, because some
of them will sell for upwards of $50+, while others might just sell
for $15 and they even each other out) a selling price of $35, then
you’ve made $540 profit (not counting Ebay fees).

They’re usually priced at $15 or less at most of the stores I
shop at – which include Value Village (except I noticed they’ve got
$19.99 on a lot of their plush costumes this year…hmmmm),
Goodwill, and consignment stores. But of course if I saw a
costume as hot as the Disney Store Boo, I’d easily pay $20 for
it.

Your BEST FRIEND is going to be their return policy so you can
go home, research it, and return it if you need to. Make sure you
know each individual store’s return policy!

The last half of 2012… What to do each month between now and
2013…

We are in the last half of 2012 (can you believe it?)…
This is usually a good time to look at the rest of the year and
either re-evaluating your plan or come up with one to finish the
year strong. Below is a calendar listing out things to consider
including each month.

July –

1. Get ready for back to school… whether you are selling on eBay, Amazon or even just simply offering information to your audience – back to school is going to be the hot topic after we get past the 4th on Wednesday.
   Have you seen it in your stores yet? What does this mean for you?
   1. As an eBay seller or Amazon seller
      1. get your BTS items ready to go. Uniforms, school supplies (lunch boxes, back-packs – focus on popular movies and themes from this summer).
   2. As an information provider
      1. write articles and provide information about planning healthy lunches for kids, budget buying for school supplies, etc.
2. Build up some toy inventory for the holidays… Many stores have summer clearance on toys so they can clear the shelves for new items coming in the fall. Target is one of the big sales and you will likely find their big clearance hitting mid-July. Even if you aren’t selling toys this year, you can pick up some great Christmas gifts for the kids in your life 😉

August –

1. Usually August is still all about back to school… but soon after it’s time for Halloween and costumes! This is an amazing niche to get into and complements toys and children’s items if you are already selling to that market. Usually I wait to offer a resource to help you sell costumes online until August – but, it occurred to me that garage sales are such a great place to find costumes that now would be a great time to make it available so you can pick up some inventory this summer and know what you are looking for. Get your hands on Sherah Taylor’s Halloween eBook for just $20 using THIS LINK:

September –

1. It’s all about costumes at this point… and a hot season it is! You can do extremely well selling used costumes that you can pick up at yard sales or thrift shops for under $10.

October –

1. It’s time to start thinking Christmas! As costumes dwindle down in October, the focus turns to Christmas and holiday pictures. Most people get their family portraits done late October/early November so they can get their cards printed and out right after Thanksgiving. Christmas outfits are hot sellers during this time… but, don’t forget accessories too! Fancy shoes and purses for little girls are popular during this season – as are matching outfits for siblings. I would recommend not listing these in a single listing… but DO be sure to reference the matching sets.
2. October is also the time to be thinking about getting ready for TOYS. Toys usually start getting super hot in November and continue right up to the New Year! You can expect the Holiday Toy Guide to come out mid-October to help you sell your toys this year.
3. October is usually the month I like to start thinking about and planning for the next year.

November –

It’s all about Christmas! Toys are usually the most
popular this month and you can be sure you’ll be hearing all
about them from me 😉

December –

Toys are still hot… but, things will start to slow down
until spring/summer sales start up again in February. This is a
great time to do your planning for 2013… and of course enjoy time
with friends and family.

What to do during the slower months…
How are you building relationship with your customers? The slower
months for your business is a great time to build a strategy for
keeping in touch with your customers. I like to keep a folder of
ecourses I plan to go through, or write and often go through them
when other parts of my business are slower. I also like to build
inventory during the slower months. You can go through the
inventory that isn’t selling and upgrade it at a consignment
shop for ‘new’ items that will have a better return for you.
