A few years back a friend of mine who runs a membership site for eBay sellers was telling me how excited she was to get her listings up. It’s always fun to have a new wave of items up on eBay… That refresh button can be a little addictive when a listing is coming to an end and a bidding war has started! But, my friend wasn’t interested in her items selling…

what?!

You heard me right!
She could care less if her items actually sold!

Why?
Because her PURPOSE to listing wasn’t to sell the item she had listed. Her PURPOSE was to get the people looking at her listings to join her mailing list! Her PUROSE was to drive traffic to her site and gain new members… and this plan worked! Whenever she was listing items on eBay, her mailing list grew… and so did her membership site numbers!

Wouldn’t it be nice to take the pressure off of having to make money on your listings and look at them as an advertising or marketing opportunity instead?

The REAL advantage to this kind of model, however, is that you become LESS DEPENDENT on eBay!

When you build a list OUTSIDE of eBay’s resources, you get control over your business because you aren’t so dependent on them. Once you have a mailing list growing, you can communicate with it and sell to it over and over!

I cannot emphasize enough – the gold is in the list. It took me a few years to really get this… don’t make the same mistake I made guys.

As an eBay seller, you are already ahead of the game. You HAVE an audience… but, are you harnessing that audience and building a mailing list that you can communicate with regularly?

A couple of weeks ago I told you about my new Start Here Course about list building…

The whole Start Here Program is designed to help those who understand the value of these ‘internet marketing’ strategies for their eBay (or online) business… but, need a step-by-step plan to implement them.

We started with Blogging… and the next natural step is to be growing a mailing list.

I know I’m not the first one on the block to teach about List Building. In fact, Jim Cockrum just released a video training course that is excellent on the same topic!

Jim is the guy who got me started years ago (2003)… he knows his stuff! I have had a few of you ask me whether they should get Jim’s course AND my course…

Here are my thoughts…
I got a peek at Jim’s course last week and it is excellent (as expected!). The entire course is a series of videos and they are great! You can learn more HERE.

My course is approached differently. It walks you through step-by-step… giving you a lesson and assignment every few days for 5 weeks. You can learn more HERE.

Both courses have very similar content… they both address building a mailing list. I don’t think you need both courses – and think it comes down to how you learn best.

If videos work best for you… and you want to pick and choose which video to watch when – I can’t recommend Jim’s course enough!

On the other hand, if you want something that is a little more step-by-step and hand holding… where you get one lesson to focus on every 3-4 days, then, I’d recommend my Start Here Program.

Here’s the thing.

I guarantee that your business won’t grow unless you are being PURPOSEFUL to grow it!

Building a mailing list from your eBay traffic (and other sources) is a must to give your business a huge BOOST!

Whether you choose to go with Jim’s List Building Training Course… or my Start Here List Building Program… it doesn’t matter.

The KEY is to do something to get that list growing as soon as you can.

USED Inventory – Here We Come!

It’s getting warmer… and yard sales are going to start popping up on the weekends! Are you ready?

Since I started coaching eBay sellers, I have encouraged using Garage Sales as an inventory builder… it really can’t be beat!

A lot of buying inventory from garage sales successfully comes from knowing what to buy. But, there really is more to it than that. If you know how to find the sales… and how to manage your shopping days, you will be WAY ahead of the competition trying to find the same deals.

Well, get ready. I’m updating my Garage Sales for Inventory Series for this newsletter! If you are new to garage sales… or just needing a little motivation, you’ll want to keep an eye out for this quick series in the next couple of weeks.

  1. Hello Jenni! I think the main problem I have with eBay is not being able to list items as fast as I would like. I do my business by myself and I think the most items in any one day that I got listed was 22! Is there a faster way to list items? I even group them by categories and it still takes so long. I sometimes photograph many items at once and get my write-ups all done the day before so that I can just list, list, list, and I still only get 20 or so per day. My average is about 12 to 15 if I have to photograph and do write-ups. I checked into turbo lister, blackthorne and the like – blackthorne looked complicated and turbo lister wasn’t any faster! HELP!!! Any suggestions? Or should I just find some help? Really don’t want to pay anyone yet. Thanks for all your help. Marsha – MY Cyber Auctions PS – I have a 10 x 20 storage unit and a yard barn packed with great items – just need a speedier way to get them into my eBay store.

    1. Hi Marsha…

To expedite my listing, I do what you seem to be doing. I take all my photos as once, do photo edits and listing at once, all the shipping at once, etc… there does come a point when you only have so much time you can put into your business and to grow, you have to bite the bullet and bring some help in. This is how I started back in 2003. I found a lady who was a power-seller but had burned out with the listing/selling process. But, she loved to shop! She trained me on the whole listing process… and I did her listings for her. We split the profits.

The thing to consider is that if you bring in help – you are making more than you would if you didn’t have the help in the first place.

If you are needing to just increase your income and can’t bring someone in to help support you, I’d recommend looking at ways to build in some automated revenue streams… this way you can keep listing at your pace but you have strategies (like building a mailing list) in place that will help you bring in additional revenue without having to spend more time listing.

I was in a similar boat as you back in 2003. I had loads of inventory but didn’t have the time to list… I needed to increase my income – but, with a toddler and newborn at home, I didn’t have the time to list more. That is when I started my first newsletter, HuntedTreasure. It took up half the time I was spending listing auctions and paid me just as much!

      Good Luck!

  2. Hello Jenni,

Thanks so much for all the information. Jenni, I am seriously thinking of your list building course! My problem is that after five wonderful years of buying and selling on ebay, I encountered two very unpleasant transactions. I was the seller both times and given my back ground in law enforcement I knew these two people were connected and out to damage my reputation on ebay. With endless hours on the phone to ebay and paypl, I got nowhere.. So, my attitude towards the lack of seller protection has made me not want to sell. My ego, tells me different. It’s pretty sad that in today’s day people still continue to harm one another? So, I am not sure as of today if I want to proceed or simply surrender? Jeni, also I never received my template for my seller sourcebook? Here is my ID Maryek. Thanks again Jenni and have a wonderful day.

    Best regards,
    Mary

    1. Mary – I’m sorry to hear about the difficult transactions you have had with eBay. Honestly, there are many reasons to be frustrated with eBay’s processes. I think this is why I get excited when I teach eBay sellers how to take control back from eBay by learning how to USE eBay instead of DEPEND on it. In fact this is why I created my Start Here Program.

Building a mailing list is one of the best ways to do this – because you are taking your customers (and POTENTIAL customers) away from eBay to a place (your mailing list) where you can build a relationship with them on your own terms. Building that relationship is going to instill trust so they are more likely to buy from you in the future.

      Hang in there!
      Jenni

PS. BTW, the template has been added to your SSB account. Let me know if you don’t see it there.
