========================================
Hello ~
Yeah!
It’s here!
Earlier this week I mentioned that I was working out a deal with Sherah Taylor (previous publisher of Auction-Moms) for her excellent Garage Sale eBook.
Although there are many different ways to find inventory… It should come to no surprise that I highly recommend garage sales.
A while back I stumbled on this wonderful resource for hitting g-sales for inventory. I had no idea other people did this – thought it was my little secret… I was getting great results buying at yard sales and reselling on eBay.
BUT THEN… I read this book and everything changed!
In fact, every year I re-read it and I pick up new strategies and tips to apply to the new garage sale season. I just finished reading the latest 2010 update to Sherah’s ebook, Secrets of Garage Sale Bargains – man, it is FULL of great ideas…
Learn things like:
- Which weekend is best to catch hot moving sales
- Tips for getting a good deal even if your best offer is refused
- Why saying, “Will you take $1 for this toy?” is a no-no
- Find out the magic words to seal the deal… almost every time!
- When the best time is to hit the sales for the best deals
The ebook sells for $17.99 – but, I was able to work out a special deal with her to offer it to my readers for only $10. I don’t think you’ll be seeing it anywhere else for this price!

Hello ~
Last week I mentioned that I would share an article I wrote years ago about building your inventory without spending any money. Building Your Inventory Without Spending a Penny!
=====================================
Many people use the slow selling season during the summer to shop and build their inventory. This really is a great time to do so… especially if you are selling used items. Yard sales are in full swing and you can get plenty of incredible merchandise for pennies on the dollar by shopping them.
What if I told you that you could get inventory without spending a cent though?
Seriously??
Yep! I have done it! Here is my secret… TRADE. You can actually trade your used clothing or items (that is in decent condition) for trade credit at many consignment stores… allowing you to trade your old items for ‘new’ ones that you know will bring in an ebay profit.
Here are some easy to follow steps to trade successfully:

Garage Sale For Inventory Plan – YOUR BUDGET
=====================================
Last week I shared with you some of the strategies I use to map out my route on a g-sale day… and today we talk about the all important budget!
Your budget will really come down to the market you are in (and of course how much you have to spend on inventory). Since I focus on selling children’s items, that is going to be the point of reference for this weeks topic of budgeting for yard sales.
20 USED costumes that sold for OVER $100 in 2008
You might be asking why in the world I would be sharing with you a list of used costumes that sold for over $100 LAST year… But, I think it is valuable information if you are thinking about selling used costumes this year.
First of all – the thing about USED items… they hold their value. Many of these same costumes and accessories that sold for over $100 last year are going to be hot sellers this year. They are worth looking into because you can pick up used costumes for $5-10 easy.
Secondly, I want you to see how you can get more lists like this one… only for 2009!
I’ve been following retail trends… and if you have are selling on eBay, you probably do to. One of the things I pay special attention to is the seasons… You have probably noticed that stores are starting to replace the back to school supply shelves with costumes already. Halloween sales should peak at the end of this month when we move right into the Christmas holiday season. This means there is still plenty of time to make a great profit selling costumes on eBay. In fact, even after the Halloween sales reach their peak in retail stores – some will be going strong through October. To take advantage of this as an eBay seller there are two key factors to be aware of:
Key #1: You need to know which costumes will be the most popular – this way, when the stores are all out of them, you can offer your inventory at a profit
Great Profits From Selling USED Halloween Costumes
I’m getting ready to head into shoulder surgery in less than 24 hours – but, have been working hard to get some goodies lined up for you.
Used costumes are just starting to pop up on eBay for Halloween. In fact, I have a list of 5 that were selling well just last week! But, before we get to that, I want to tell you about what I was working on today for you…
Just TODAY I was able to work out a deal to get you one of the best resources for selling costumes on eBay. Most people have to wait until September 1st to get Secrets of Hot Selling Halloween Costumes – but, you can get it early AND at a great discount!
If you are waiting for the Holidays to make some mula with toys… pay attention! USED costumes are great sellers on eBay that lead right into the holiday toy selling season.
For only 20 bucks you not only get this fantastic eBook full of tips and strategies for picking out hot selling costumes, but, you will also get a weekly report listing the top 20 selling USED costumes on eBay all the way through the end of October!
Sherah KNOWS costumes – she has made loads selling them herself. Every year I hear how she picked up a USED Disney BOO costume for around 10 bucks… and easily turns it around for a huge profit of over $100. It’s a short selling season, but a crazy good one!
Anyhow, Sherah spills the beans on how she works her magic with costume auctions – if you sell costumes (or even if you don’t – but want to), this is a MUST have!

Back To The Basics…
Do you have an About Me page? I sure hope so…
I’ve been spending a lot of time on eBay poking around, researching trends and I am always suprised at the number of sellers (even power sellers) that do not have an About Me page! And, most of those that do – aren’t using it to it’s full potential… talk about leaving money on the table.
If you DON’T have an About Me page, you need to pay attention.
If you DO, you need to pay attention.
Your About Me page on eBay is one of your biggest eBay assets when it comes to creating multiple revenue streams. It is one of the KEYS to USING eBay to grow your business instead of eBay using you).

One of the things I have talked about numerous times is the value of selling within a niche. When I’m talking about a niche – I’m talking about a group of products that the same audience has an interest for. The ‘tighter’ your niche is (or the more focused it is), the less competition you should have selling to that market.
So – for example…
Clothing or apparel is a niche… but a tighter, more focused niche would be women’s clothing or children’s clothing. You could sell just clothing in general – but, think about how much more you could cross-promote your items if you were only selling women’s, children’s OR men’s clothing.
If you know your customers are interested in women’s clothing – it is easy to create offers for them to purchase more from you. (And, remember, it is always easier to sell to those already showing an interest in buying from you!) On the other hand, if you are just selling clothing in general… you won’t know your customers as well and will have difficulty effectively promoting other products you are selling. In other words, if you cross promote to your other auctions and most of them are dresses – but, this particular customer is a man who has bought a jacket from you… it is likely your promotion won’t be all that effective.

1. Garage Sale Plan: Making The Most Of Your Day
=====================================
It’s time!
Today we are going to focus on the big garage sale day. Now, before
you even get up in the morning to hit the road – you should already
have a plan and a budget. We already covered mapping out your route
HERE:
Garage Sale Plan: Mapping Your Route -
http://jennihunt.com/blog/?p=116
And we have discussed budgeting for the sale day HERE:
Garage Sale Plan: Your Budget -
http://jennihunt.com/blog/?p=121
Now, it’s all about game day!
The night before you plan to go to yard-sales, be sure to print out
your route (and include any maps if necessary)… If you are a
subscriber to MyToyGuide or HuntedTreasure, you’ll want to have
that printed out as well – or at least a list of inventory you are
looking for. Obviously, you don’t have to keep to this list – but,
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen something at a sale and
couldn’t remember if it was an item that I saw doing well or very
poorly on eBay. It’s just nice to have that reference… You also
want to have hit the bank already. Remember – you want smaller
bills so that it is easier to negotiate and buy those twenty five
cent toys. There is nothing like talking the seller down from $20
to $5 on something and then asking for change from the only twenty
dollar bill you have.

The Garage Sale Plan – Your Budget
Okay… let’s talk a little bit about budget for hitting those garage sales.
Your budget will really come down to the market you are in… and since we are focusing on children’s items – that is going to be the point of reference for this weeks topic of budgeting for yard sales.
I usually bring only $80-100 with me when I am hitting yardsales. This doesn’t mean I don’t stop for more – but, I’ve been able to do fine with around a hundred bucks. I like to break it down so that it isn’t all $20′s… it helps the seller as well because they aren’t having to give me change if I find a hot Blue’s Clues notepad for twenty five cents.

Hi ~
When I start talking about garage sales I always get a variety of responses. I’m surprised that many don’t really understand how many true treasures (and I’m not talking about junky “treasures”) can be found. Usually those in the market for children’s items aren’t quite as picky about buying used… But, some have a hard time with the idea of buying second hand. I can understand that; however, I believe that in this economy, some of those ideals are changing.
As the going gets tough, more people are turning to buying second hand so they can save and continue to enjoy some of the other things they appreciate about their lifestyle still. This is really good news for eBay sellers because it means that more people are turning to places where they can get things used – and eBay is one of the top hit websites/resources available!
So, whether you have always looked for used items… or are just starting out – the Garage Sale Plan series we are doing is designed to give you a strategy to get your hands on quality inventory in a time efficient manner… and with the least amount of money.
As always, if you have a question… comment… tip… whatever, please share!
Enjoy!

Last year when I started this Auction Strategists Newsletter, I promised to only send our a newsletter when I had quality content to offer. If you are like me – you are bombarded from every direction with all kinds of INFORMATION… the last thing you need is just another thing to read.
At the same time, you have probably been looking for ways to grow your eBay business in this crazy economy… I have spent most of the last year analyzing different strategies that I’ve used and that many of my mentors have used to grow their business and I’m really looking forward to sharing with you what I have learned.
More than anything – I have noticed a gap in the helpful information that is available to you as an eBay seller… there are some great resources for learning how to sell better and increase your bids/sales/etc. But, what if you want more? Any business owner recognizes that putting all your eggs in one basket (ie., eBay) isn’t wise. What if you want to add baskets or various revenue streams? Again, there are some fabulous resources out there that teach how to grow an online business… but, who do you listen to? I’ve spent 6+ years learning about internet marketing. I’ve bought into some cheezy stuff in that time… and I’ve learned who to trust. I am more than happy to share these resources with you… and often have; however, I’ve noticed something… and this is where that gap is. Many eBay sellers are having a difficult time applying the strategies that ‘internet marketers’ are teaching to their eBay business. It is likely that you understand that adding a blog, for example, is a good idea for your business – you’ve probably heard that many times… but do you understand the why? And, if you do… do you understand how to apply a blog to your current eBay business so that it grows what you already have going instead of starting over?

1. Thinking Ahead – Plans for 2009
=====================================
It’s November already… and before we get too into the Holiday Season, it is important to look ahead to the New Year. I know… I know… crazy – but, time flies and I guarantee if you take the time now to look ahead, it will be time well spent.
Some people like to get into great detail when they look ahead to the next year… I’m not one of those people. First of all, I just don’t have the time to plan every week out… but, more importantly, I have learned first hand, that things don’t always go as planned. Life happens… One of the beauties of working from home and having your own online business is that you are able to be flexible when life get’s in the way – besides… isn’t that why you have your own business? So life CAN get in the way?
The best piece you can add to your plan for 2009 is flexibility. Start with an umbrella or high level plan for the year — think of 4-5 ways you want to grow your business or business goals and write them down. You could include things such as:
- find more inventory resources for reselling
- implement a plan for building a mailing list
- learn how to set up my own blog
- find blogs that I will regularly visit and comment on to become a part of the community and help establish myself in that particular market
- write a report to give away as incentive to join my mailing list
- increase ebay revenue by 20%
- add 2 new revenue streams
I could go on – but, you get the idea.

1. Selling Holiday Toys In Today’s Economy
=====================================
This year is a first… since eBay has been around, the economy has
never been where it is now – and I can’t help but think about how
it might effect the biggest selling season of the year… holiday toy
sales.
I’m confident that even if parents can’t afford to, they will find
a way to buy toys for their children. And, if they can’t afford to
get the newest toys for this year… they will buy used.
The point is –
They are still going to buy toys!
Did you know that used toys sell well on eBay all year long? – And
they do quite well during the holiday season too.
I can’t help but wonder if the new toys will slump a bit this year…
only to find that used toys go through the roof on eBay!
We’ll have to wait and see to find out – but, it doesn’t hurt to be
prepared.
One of the best strategies toy sellers can implement this holiday
season is to offer both used and new toys to their customers.

This is such a great question that I got last week – and, I think it is something that every mailing list owner struggles with at somepoint. I know I did when I started my first newsletter back in 2003… but, not so much anymore. Now, I have ideas running around my head that won’t stop long enough for me to catch up! And, hopefully you will too at the end of this article.
First of all, I’m going to assume that you understand the VALUE of building a mailing list from your eBay business. If not, please take a look at the archives at www.jennihunt.com/blog – and comment with any questions.
Sell USED Costumes for Serious Money on eBay
Sherah Taylor with www.auction-moms.com has just released a new ebook that outlines the entire process for selling costumes on eBay. (Sherah – if you are reading this. I am SO jealous that you came up with this idea first!
But, she should know – She is known for selling a USED Disney Boo costume last year for over $120 – and I think she said she picked it up for $10 at her local consignment shop a few days prior – She made over $100!
Anyhow, Sherah spills the beans on how she works her magic with costume auctions – if you sell costumes (or even if you don’t – but want to). this is a must have! One of the great things about selling costumes is that you can buy them from thrift shops and consignment stores – and list them right away. instant profits! All you have to know is which costumes sell the best. Sherah lists over 250 USED costumes that sell for $20-80+ on eBay this time of year in her ebook.
Plus, not only do you get the ebook – but, she is providing a list of the top 20 hot selling costumes weekly sent to your inbox!
Okay – here is the best part. Sherah is selling this ebook for $27. but, she is offering it to my readers for $20!

Remember. this is a short selling season – Halloween will be here before you know it. To make the most from costumes, you need to start listing them now.
and I have to say, Sherah’s ebook is the best way to get you going.

GoodWill Hunting – Finding Inventory for Resell at Thrift Stores
A while back I was working on an article about buying inventory from thrift shops. Thrift shops are one of my favorite places to find used inventory – and I have a system that works really well… as I was writing the article, I came across this article by Melissa Smith – she shares all of the strategies I already use when I go to thrift shops (I especially love shopping with my mom to get a senior discount – saving an extra 40% on everything!!)… so, rather than recreate the wheel – I asked Melissa if I could share her article. Here you go…
Goodwill Hunting: Finding Inventory for Resell at Thrift Stores

Ebay Seller melissakbs
I’m Melissa Smith, a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom) to my 2-year-old daughter, and wife to my husband Tim. I’ve been eBaying since 1998 and selling kid’s clothes for a year. I sell mostly children’s clothes under the ID “melisskbs” and I get 99% of my inventory from Goodwill’s thrift stores. You can see my auctions for yourself here:
Auctions by “melisskbs”
I used to work for Goodwill Industries in the Job Placement Division, and I am one of their most frequent customers! I’ve sold Baby Lulu, Hanna Andersson, Oilily, Kelly’s Kids, Orient Expressed, Lilly Pulitzer, and untold numbers of Gymboree, all purchased from the GW. Even as a kid, I loved hunting for bargains at the thrift stores.
Here’s how you can find great “treasures” and inventory for your auctions at thrift stores such as Goodwill, Salvation Army, and other charity thrift stores.
Let’s Get Started!
First, go often and find out when new merchandise arrives. At my local GW, a truck comes every day from the main donation center warehouse. Also, the stock is rotated every day among the 16 stores in the district so there is always something new to find.
