If you run any kind of business… whether you like it or not, you are somehow involved in marketing. In fact, even if you don’t realize it, you are marketing your business. It happens whether you have a ‘formal’ plan or not… It happens when you tell other people what you do – either by word of mouth, through email, flyers on bulletin boards… or however else you communicate your business services/products to potential customers.

Here is the thing…
As an eBay seller, you have a choice.

You can A. Let eBay do all the marketing for you (and your competition)…
You can B. Let eBay affiliate marketers do your marketing (and your competition)…
Or,
You can C. Take the reigns into your own hands and do your own marketing.

What’s cool about Option C is that it is kind of an ‘all of the above’ sort of thing. Not only will you benefit from your own marketing efforts – you will continue to benefit from eBay and other affiliate marketers as well.

You must have a plan if you are going to be marketing your online business though… Before we get into how to develop a plan, I want to be very clear that marketing is not the same as advertising. Advertising can be a piece of your marketing plan; however, placing ads on various websites is not in itself a marketing plan.

Here are a few guidelines for deciding how you are going to market your eBay business:

1. Know your customer base
This comes down to defining a niche that you are selling to. We have talked about this before and it is one of the most important things you can do for your business if you want to see growth.

2. Know what marketing tools and resources are available
The internet is PACKED with tools you can use for marketing — from blogging to twitter, from forums to website advertising, from article marketing to social networking… It is important to know the resources you have available to you so you can make educated choices as to where you want to spend your efforts.

3. Decide what tools you want to use to promote your eBay business.
I highly recommend that you start with blogging – it is simple and provides huge results for search engine optimization and traffic generation.

4. Learn how to use email marketing effectively and incorporate it with the promotion tools you are going to be using.

5. Grow beyond yourself by incorporating affiliate programs into your growth plan.

We will continue to look at these guidelines in more detail over the summer… but, I’m curious — where are you in this process?

PS. If you want to jump ahead, you might want to check out the Internet Marketing Most Wanted program that Dave Lovelace (From The Best of eBay and he is also an expert on Jim Cockrum’s www.my-silent-team.com site) has put together. He has over a dozen marketers who have agreed to release their proven blueprints for generating cash quickly on the internet. Learn more here.

2. Heads Up: John Cow
=====================================

One of my favorite resources for blogging is John Cow’s blog. He is all about building a business not just a blog — and if you can creatively apply the principles he teaches to your eBay business, you should soon have a blog that is generating a nice revenue stream (even aside from eBay!). If you are new to internet marketing and the blogging world, some of his stuff might be a bit advanced; however, it is worth checking out his free report about building a profitable business.

Go here and download the report.
