One of the things I have talked about numerous times is the value of selling within a niche. When I’m talking about a niche – I’m talking about a group of products that the same audience has an interest for. The ‘tighter’ your niche is (or the more focused it is), the less competition you should have selling to that market.
So – for example…
Clothing or apparel is a niche… but a tighter, more focused niche would be women’s clothing or children’s clothing. You could sell just clothing in general – but, think about how much more you could cross-promote your items if you were only selling women’s, children’s OR men’s clothing.
If you know your customers are interested in women’s clothing – it is easy to create offers for them to purchase more from you. (And, remember, it is always easier to sell to those already showing an interest in buying from you!) On the other hand, if you are just selling clothing in general… you won’t know your customers as well and will have difficulty effectively promoting other products you are selling. In other words, if you cross promote to your other auctions and most of them are dresses – but, this particular customer is a man who has bought a jacket from you… it is likely your promotion won’t be all that effective.

1. Garage Sale Plan: Your Budget
=====================================
The Garage Sale Plan – Your Budget
Okay… let’s talk a little bit about budget for hitting those garage sales.
Your budget will really come down to the market you are in… and since we are focusing on children’s items – that is going to be the point of reference for this weeks topic of budgeting for yard sales.
I usually bring only $80-100 with me when I am hitting yardsales. This doesn’t mean I don’t stop for more – but, I’ve been able to do fine with around a hundred bucks. I like to break it down so that it isn’t all $20′s… it helps the seller as well because they aren’t having to give me change if I find a hot Blue’s Clues notepad for twenty five cents.

Hi ~
When I start talking about garage sales I always get a variety of responses. I’m surprised that many don’t really understand how many true treasures (and I’m not talking about junky “treasures”) can be found. Usually those in the market for children’s items aren’t quite as picky about buying used… But, some have a hard time with the idea of buying second hand. I can understand that; however, I believe that in this economy, some of those ideals are changing.
As the going gets tough, more people are turning to buying second hand so they can save and continue to enjoy some of the other things they appreciate about their lifestyle still. This is really good news for eBay sellers because it means that more people are turning to places where they can get things used – and eBay is one of the top hit websites/resources available!
So, whether you have always looked for used items… or are just starting out – the Garage Sale Plan series we are doing is designed to give you a strategy to get your hands on quality inventory in a time efficient manner… and with the least amount of money.
As always, if you have a question… comment… tip… whatever, please share!
Enjoy!

Last year when I started this Auction Strategists Newsletter, I promised to only send our a newsletter when I had quality content to offer. If you are like me – you are bombarded from every direction with all kinds of INFORMATION… the last thing you need is just another thing to read.
At the same time, you have probably been looking for ways to grow your eBay business in this crazy economy… I have spent most of the last year analyzing different strategies that I’ve used and that many of my mentors have used to grow their business and I’m really looking forward to sharing with you what I have learned.
More than anything – I have noticed a gap in the helpful information that is available to you as an eBay seller… there are some great resources for learning how to sell better and increase your bids/sales/etc. But, what if you want more? Any business owner recognizes that putting all your eggs in one basket (ie., eBay) isn’t wise. What if you want to add baskets or various revenue streams? Again, there are some fabulous resources out there that teach how to grow an online business… but, who do you listen to? I’ve spent 6+ years learning about internet marketing. I’ve bought into some cheezy stuff in that time… and I’ve learned who to trust. I am more than happy to share these resources with you… and often have; however, I’ve noticed something… and this is where that gap is. Many eBay sellers are having a difficult time applying the strategies that ‘internet marketers’ are teaching to their eBay business. It is likely that you understand that adding a blog, for example, is a good idea for your business – you’ve probably heard that many times… but do you understand the why? And, if you do… do you understand how to apply a blog to your current eBay business so that it grows what you already have going instead of starting over?

1. Thinking Ahead – Plans for 2009
=====================================
It’s November already… and before we get too into the Holiday Season, it is important to look ahead to the New Year. I know… I know… crazy – but, time flies and I guarantee if you take the time now to look ahead, it will be time well spent.
Some people like to get into great detail when they look ahead to the next year… I’m not one of those people. First of all, I just don’t have the time to plan every week out… but, more importantly, I have learned first hand, that things don’t always go as planned. Life happens… One of the beauties of working from home and having your own online business is that you are able to be flexible when life get’s in the way – besides… isn’t that why you have your own business? So life CAN get in the way?
The best piece you can add to your plan for 2009 is flexibility. Start with an umbrella or high level plan for the year — think of 4-5 ways you want to grow your business or business goals and write them down. You could include things such as:
- find more inventory resources for reselling
- implement a plan for building a mailing list
- learn how to set up my own blog
- find blogs that I will regularly visit and comment on to become a part of the community and help establish myself in that particular market
- write a report to give away as incentive to join my mailing list
- increase ebay revenue by 20%
- add 2 new revenue streams
I could go on – but, you get the idea.

When you are in business for yourself, especially one that is conducted online like selling on eBay, you’ll find there are a number of different things for you to learn about that can save you time and make you money. Outsourcing is by far one of the more exciting things to discover and put to use.
All too common is the business owner who feels they have to do everything themselves in order for things to go smoothly in their online venture. This couldn’t be farther from the truth! Lately, we have covered a lot of ground about different ways to grow your eBay business. We have discussed using blogs to drive traffic to your auctions… and the value of a mailing list… how to use small reports to help build that mailing list… and more. But, a lot of these topics are new to eBay sellers and even though we have discussed them in some detail recently – many sellers don’t have the time to really figure out how to implement some of the new ideas they have. Outsourcing could be the key you are looking for…

1. Selling Holiday Toys In Today’s Economy
=====================================
This year is a first… since eBay has been around, the economy has
never been where it is now – and I can’t help but think about how
it might effect the biggest selling season of the year… holiday toy
sales.
I’m confident that even if parents can’t afford to, they will find
a way to buy toys for their children. And, if they can’t afford to
get the newest toys for this year… they will buy used.
The point is –
They are still going to buy toys!
Did you know that used toys sell well on eBay all year long? – And
they do quite well during the holiday season too.
I can’t help but wonder if the new toys will slump a bit this year…
only to find that used toys go through the roof on eBay!
We’ll have to wait and see to find out – but, it doesn’t hurt to be
prepared.
One of the best strategies toy sellers can implement this holiday
season is to offer both used and new toys to their customers.

1. Using Small Reports In Your eBay Business
=====================================
Lately we have been talking about driving traffic to your auctions (or website) through blogging… but, let’s take a step back and look at the big picture for a minute.
I’m going to make an assumption that the goal of eBay sellers is to bring in a profit (I know, it’s a stretch
. There are two types of sellers – those who are hobby sellers and those who are building a business. I’m going to focus on those who are interested in growing their business.
Okay – this might sound really simple… but, stay with me – sometimes it is good to realize how simple strategies really are.
How do you bring in money from selling on eBay?
There are a couple things you need…
First of all, you need to have a product to sell. You can sell your own product or someone elses… but, it is a must that you have ‘something’ to sell.
Secondly… to have a successful sale on eBay, you have to have a customer. Where does this customer come from? They come from the traffic or visitors that come to your auction listing… either through eBay or another link that directly goes to your listing. Every visitor to your site is a potential customer.

1. eBay’s Link Policy Changes – How It Can Help You IF You Are In a Niche
=====================================
Previously we have discussed some of the value in selling (and/or) marketing to a niche. [Archived newsletters are available at: www.jennihunt.com/blog if you want to catch some of those discussions.] Simply put, selling to a niche is really just focusing on a very specific group of (prospective) customers.
There is an incredible amount of value to selling to a niche…
1. You can cross-promote other items you are selling. If your customer is interested in one particular item… and your entire product line focuses on a specific niche, there is a good chance that your customer will be interested in other products you are offering.
For example: Let’s say you sell products for small dog owners. If your customer has purchased a dog collar for their pet from you, you can assume that they might also be interested in buying a leash, food dish, carrying bag, etc.
2. You can easily drive traffic to your auctions from other sources if you are in a specific niche…

Rethinking Strategies That Have Been Around For Years
=====================================
Last night I received an email… honestly, I didn’t read the whole thing – in fact, I didn’t get past the first sentence or two… Not because the topic didn’t catch my attention, quite the opposite actually.
The topic was about UPSELLING. And, although it was referring to marketing online… my mind immediately went to a waitressing job I had college. I use to be a waitress at a restaurant that offered incredible customer service training. One of the courses we were required to take was about upselling. (If you think this has nothing to do with eBay… think again
Keep reading…)
Here is what upselling looks like in the restaurant business…
“Would you like fries with that?”
“How about some ice cream on your warmed slice of pie?”
Or
“Sure, I could get you coffee with that… but, a café mocha is a perfect complement. Would you like to try one?”
“Would you like another drink?”
“How about cheese on your hamburger?”
“Was that a large orange juice?”
… all asked while shaking your head ‘yes’
By the time my customer’s added cheese to their burger, ordered a large drink, added ice cream to their desert and upgraded to a café mocha – the bill went up $5 easy… and that translated to higher tips for me.

Do You Have The Gift? Gain a 6th Sense For Finding Inventory At Yard Sales
=====================================
Have you ever noticed that some eBay sellers seem to have no trouble finding items that resell on eBay well? Some people seem to have this gift – they can go to a sale and instantly pick up a few items that end up doing really well for them on eBay… It’s like a 6th sense or something – they just have this feeling or hunch that an item might do well. Maybe you are even one of them!
Below I share 4 tips to keep in mind when you are out and stumble on something that you think may be a nice seller for you…
Before I get to them, however, I wanted to let you know about a special treat I was able to work out with Sherah Taylor over at www.Auction-Moms.com.

1. The eBay Bombshell – How Is Your Business Affected?
=====================================
Not too long ago eBay dropped a bombshell… It is no a surprise that eBay is raising their fees – they seem to announce this every year. (If you haven’t heard about the changes eBay is making, Skip McGrath has done a wonderful job comparing the new changes to eBay’s old policies… you can read about it here: http://blog.skipmcgrath.com/public/item/195904.
The changes eBay is making are being talked about everywhere… and there is one thing I have noticed as I have browsed around different forums. The changes seem to be affecting each seller differently based on their business strategy. Let’s look at the following four seller scenarios for a better understanding…
1. First of all, there are those sellers who start their auctions super low to motivate bidders to bid. A low starting bid (a penny or ninety-nine cents) is enticing to bidders because they see it as an opportunity to possibly get a great deal on an item. There is also the point that if there are two identical items offered at two different prices, bidders will bid on the lower of the two. This seller will not benefit as much from the drop in insertion fees. They will, however, be impacted by the higher final value fees. The only way this benefits this seller is if they have a deadbeat buyer who doesn’t pay. When you report a non-paying buyer, you get more of your money back on the final value fee refund.
